We live in a world and in times, where we have more apps on our phones than we have hours in a day. If you are a person who, on the last day of every year feels that each day went by being ‘busy', but at the end of the 365 days, there was no feeling of ‘fulfillment’ or ‘achievement’, then Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky have the perfect book for you!
Make Time comes packed with four simple steps and 87 tactics that can help you live a life that is more fulfilling by making time for doing things you have always wanted to do but could never prioritize. The book gives the power of designing your day, back to you! Yes, not all of the 87 tactics work for everyone the same way, and the authors very clearly state that it is all about trial and error and journaling what works for you, and then repeating it.
The problems and solutions that these ex-Google product designers talk about in the book may not arouse the ‘Eureka’ moment for most readers, but they surely will make one more aware of the ‘time wasters’ in their lives, which they have fallen in love with, as a matter of design!
Does the book work practically? I for sure am trying to implement some of their tactics and seeing decent results. There are days when it becomes tough to stick to the methods, particularly if you are in a salaried profession, as other people can bulldoze what the authors call ‘your highlight time’. However, the methods do help in redesigning most days better, so I am hoping it will be a happier closing when I reflect back on this 31st December.
